All good things must come to and end, and as such, so does The West Wing. The endearing show of a fictitious President and his staff has won a place in the heart of many television viewers, with character driven stories that make the mundane life of the White House seem interesting. Stories that show how politics should be and that in reality, a workplace or a close knit community is not preoccupied with sex (as many other TV series would have you believe).
If you don’t thing a White House based TV show could be interesting, go watch season one, because to appreciate the shows final season, you have to know it’s history and fall in love with it’s characters.
As I think I said of season six, seven is as diverse as they come, with the election campaigns in full swing, and the outgoing president caught up in international situations, we have more players than every before, and multiple storylines that weave in and out, keeping the storyline turning over a quite a pace.
Sadness hit’s season seven like a sledgehammer, and fans will know that John Spencer passed away during the filming on this season, and he is honoured through hi character. His death portrayed between two episodes is probably television at its most emotional as the knowledge of the Spenser’s actual death creeps into the onscreen dramatisation of his characters death. Superbly done, and with great respect to the man, credit must be given to the writers for there deft hand at re-crafting the storyline without seeming to skip a beat, and to his fellow actors and friends as they give him a fitting television farewell.
There is also a lot of joy in this episode as storylines are wrapped up and relationships are allowed to creep in as the workload eases off – though to tell you more would be to spoil the surprises in store.
All in all a fitting end to one of televisions best produced, written and acted shows.
