The Unit is a special forces team that does the government’s dirty work, the illegal operations, the black ops that keep our country (well, American) safe. Now in it’s second season, the Unit entertains once more for 23 solid missions.
The characters seem more comfortable in their roles now that they’ve got some experience and this help brings the acting up a notch, the screen writing however still has that ever present edge of cheese. Maybe it’s the inclusion of the Desperate Housewives element – the wives and girlfriends back home that have to keep their husbands secrets identities, well, secret, whilst going about their mundane lives. Love them or hate them, there’s no doubting that the girls give the programme some of its cheese, whilst also being an essential component to the shows originality and realism.
The writers seem to have gone slightly darker this season, trying to expose the dark underbelly of any team that works illegally for a government that would deny their very existence if they ever got discovered. It’s this darker underbelly that sets up the shows season cliff-hanger and sets what could be a slightly different course for season three.
With plenty of action, varied locations and just enough budget to make the whole thing semi believable, The Unit Season 2 is a great way to waste and evening or two.
Food for thought: The Unit generally break the law to get their job done during every mission, but because they’re taking down the bad guys, it’s ok.
Or is it?
Who decides who the bad guy is, and what motivates the people who make these decisions. It’s worth thinking about this, maybe not so much when watching The Unit, but it’s defiantly worth engaging your brain if you are watching the evening news.
