More Games to Movies?

Posted by admin On June - 19 - 2008

Last month it was reported that Japanese video game publisher Capcom were looking to turn more of their game franchises into feature films, and, to that end, they were supposedly doing a lot of wheeling and dealing at Cannes this year. Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto was quoted as saying, “We want to do with games what Marvel did with comics”. It seems that we now know at least one of the properties that is being targeted: Lost Planet: Extreme Condition will soon likely join the Resident Evil and Street Fighter franchises on the big screen.

The tip comes courtesy of David Hayter, writer of the X-Men and Watchmen movies, and voice of Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid video games. He appeared on Evil Avatar Radio earlier in the week, where he revealed that he was in talks to write a Lost Planet movie. I’ve only played a little bit of the game myself, but it takes place on the icy planet E.D.N. III., where an alien species known as Akrid have held back human colonization attempts. It has mech robots and power suits, which should be enough to sell most geeks on the flick. [filmjunk]

New Mutant Chronicles Poster

The Mutant Chronicles? A movie that I’ve never heard of and it’s already onto it’s third poster?! I must pay more attention!

Here’s the synopsis from IMDB:

Earth’s natural resources have been exhausted by mankind and battle rages between the soldiers of four leading Corporations: the Capitol, Bauhaus, Mishima and Imperial.

Mitch Hunter and Nathan Rooker, battle hardened Capitol soldiers, fight a desperate battle against a Bauhaus advance. When an errant shell destroys an ancient stone seal, they find themselves facing a new enemy: hideous necrmutants, with boneblades that grow from their arms. Mithc barely manages to escape. Nathan does not.

The mutants multiply by millions and they destroy all before them. The Corporations’ leader, Constantine, is about to abandon the planet and leave countless innocents to their desperate fate, when he is approached by Brother Samuel, leader of the Brotherhood, and ancient monastic order

Samuel is keep of the Chronicles, a book that prophesies both the rise of the Mutants, and the ‘Deliverer’ that will destroy them. Samuel believes he is that Deliverer destined to journey deep into the earth and destroy the source of the mutant scourge.

He manages to recruit Mitch, along with a handful of like-minded soldiers: Steiner, honor bound Bauhaus officer; sword wielding Severian; street fighter El Jesus; fearless beauty Duval; and stoic warrior Juba.

“Mutant Chronicle” follows Mitch and Samuel’s mission to venture into the very heart of the darkness in an attempt to save the planet from marauding hordes of deathless mutants.

First Details on Kiwi Creature Feature Amatu

It’s early days yet but start keeping an eye out for Amatu, a New Zealand creature feature from directors Marc and Paul Swadel and the production company behind extreme comedy The Devil Dared Me To. Just accepted into the NAFF – the co-production market hosted by Korean festival PiFan – the film is a creature feature that fuses New Zealand legend with Japanese influences. Here’s an excerpt from the synopsis at the NAFF site:

On the second day of they’re trek bump into Raymond, an ex-cop who has taken his “infected” son deep into the Amatu Ranges in an attempt to keep his “problem” under wraps. This “problem” causes his son Leo to become a creature that has to feed on human flesh to survive. This nocturnal abomination infects those who are bitten with the same cursed blood. Raymond is too weak to kill his son and end the curse, so he must hunt and destroy the people Leo has infected.

Concept, production art and the team behind this one are all very strong, expect good things… [twitch]
