In Love With Adolf Hitler promised ‘never before seen footage of Hitler and the nazi regime, captured on camera by his lover, Eva Braun’. What it suggested at was a documentary with exclusive colour footage of a more personal Hitler and an insight into his human side through his relationship with Eva Braun.
Whilst there is no denying the footage is as described, and it is quite exceptional, as a documentary, In Love fails completely. Rather than show us a different side to Hitler, some unknown nuances uncovered by this film and his relationship, In Love self destructs and becomes nothing more that a piece of poorly written propaganda.
It goes out of its way to beat into the viewer the view that Hitler and Braun were both evil to the core, that there was not an ounce of good in either of them. At one point, Hitler is belittled for having a dream that every German should have a car – and designing the Volkswagen himself – because he drove around in a Merc. The documentary utilises plenty of out of context emotional phrases and passes judgment on behaviours without presenting any proof.
It’s safe to say that most of Hitler’s ideas were evil, and that the man himself had a nasty streak, but In Love promised something different than what it delivered.
It’s almost fitting that included in the special features is a piece of post war American propaganda by Frank Capra that is so one sided, it’s laughable.
I guess history really is written only by the victors.
