Eddie Murphy finally leaves his fetish for playing multiple members of the cast behind in this occasionally adult kids flick. Though to be honest, he does kinda play two characters, but both of them look like him so we’ll forgive him this time.
The plot is basic; Dave is a spaceship in the form of a human being (modeled on Eddie Murphy) piloted by a crew of Lilliputians, sent to Earth to harvest all it’s oceans to save their home planet. But things do not go to plan as Dave meets earth woman Gina Morrison and her son.
The exposure to Earth has some unusual side effects on the crew and they start exhibiting emotional characteristics as they discover their true selves.
Meet Dave never looked like much of a movie from the trailer – it had that air of a movie that showed it’s best moments in said trailer and left nothing new for the actual movie. I was however pleasantly surprised. Sure, it’s mostly a kids movie, predictable and cheesy, but it was fun as well.
Check your brain at the door, grab some popcorn and allow yourself to wallow in some silly fun as you witness Eddie Murphy slowly resurrect his comedic career.
Food for thought (spoilers): Meet Dave has some great themes hidden in all the cheesiness, but the overriding theme comes through Gina’s son who is constantly getting bullied because he’s different. Dave encourages him and tells him that it’s all right to be different. It’s through this encouragement that the boy is able to rise above his low self-esteem and manages to help save Dave during one of the climatic scenes.
