This year around a week before my son was born; New Zealand heard the news of its greatest adventurer’s death. Sir Edmund Hillary conquered Mt Everest and left a legacy for humanity to model.
Sir Edmund Hillary 1919 – 2008 is a Television New Zealand DVD presentation capturing the tribute services which honoured our greatest hero. The DVD includes full coverage of the Sir Ed’s State funeral, and the Service of Thanksgiving hosted my Her Majesty the Queen. It also contains a Tribute Documentary hosted by Sir Ed’s Friend Tom Scott.
This is the all you can eat version of what many of us saw on the news. It is the complete coverage of the services that was aired in New Zealand by the state broadcaster. It is great quality and very well put together. But I think the gem of this DVD set is the tribute documentary about the life of Sir Ed. It’s not your traditional historical doco of the life of a hero; but more of friends, colleagues and family telling their stories about this great man. The determination, the tragedy, the humility and love that Sir Ed showed through his life is so well put by those who knew him best. The doco also highlights his humanitarian work and his love for Nepal. Past pupils of the schools he built spoke about how they viewed Sir Ed. It was also sad to watch the story of how Sir Ed came to terms with the death of his wife and daughter in a tragic plane crash. This doco is very inspiring.
It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves. – Sir Edmund Hillary
A $5 Donation from the sale of each DVD will be made to the Himalayan Trust.
