While being funny and entertaining, The Darjeeling Limited is also very much a thought-piece kind of a movie.
The three Whitman brothers (Francis L., Peter L. and Jack L.) embark on a ‘spiritual journey’, which involves (in glorious paradox) arguing about anything/everything at dinner, fighting with one another, lusting over train stewardesses and causing mischief on (and getting kicked off of) the train, keeping secrets from each other, gossipping, frivilous touristy spending and many other forms of conflict and competition – oh yes, and various visits to ‘spiritual places’ along the way. Francis (the oldest) is religiously trying to unite his brothers again – and (though they don’t know it) pay a visit to their mother. This uniting plan keeps getting frustrated by random things (i.e. attempting to save two boys lives, saving one, and attending the other’s funeral, to name one). These interruptions actually end up causing more spiritual growth than Francis’ elaborate plan.
This is a great watch if you’re up for it. There is brief and partial nudity and sexual inuendoes/content, so it will not be appropriate for some, but the story is a good one and has a lot to say about spirituality having more to do with relationships and people rather than experiences and places.
