The Nines is a trippy mind bending film whose themes and plot make it incredibly difficult to review without including spoilers. Split into three main acts, you know right from the get go that this isn’t going to be your usual structured fare, and whilst the second act is a bit of a drag, the end of it is a major payoff that makes you sit up straight and concentrate fully on the final act to see how everything pans out.
This isn’t a movie that plays with your mind just for the sake of it; rather it contains in its entwined narrative some though provoking themes about reality and higher powers.
Ryan Reynolds plays the lead roles and seems to relish the chance to play three separate but similar roles, and is supported by a capable cast that brings the whole thing together.
Put all your expectations aside and allow your mind to wander at the possibilities that The Nines presents and you’ll have plenty to think about at the end of the movie, as well a a few laughs along the way.
Oh, and be sure to check out the short movie God in the special features.
