Does Hollywood have any idea to explain how there were allied troops operating in Poland in WWII?
The Russians liberated Poland, most particularly Auschwitz. Not the Allies. And if one thinks that altering history that much for a film is no big deal, just take a look at the European reacting to U-571. The British were so pissed off by the American taking credit for capturing the Enigma encoder, the screenwriter ended up having to issue a formal apology.
So Magneto becomes one of the 20,000 that ended up in Bergin-Belsen? Are they then going to explain how he and Magda ended up in the Ukraine? Or is Magda even involved in this script? If not, Hollywood has removed one of the principal catalysts for Magnus’ alienation from humanity. There is a sensible pattern to Magneto’s basic origin story that does not need to be mucked with to make a good, entertaining and dramatic, movie.
He escapes Auschwitz with Magda (something that could be covered in the first ten minutes of the film). They flee east, marry, have a child, Anya dies and Magda leaves him because he displayed his powers (something that does not have to be shown, but can be hinted at and have Magneto explain later in a dramatic monologue most actors would eat with a shovel). He then emigrates to Israel, meets Xavier in a mental hospital for concentration camp victims. That’s where the meat of the story starts where the two men realize they are both mutants and that mutants need protection, though they discover that that means to different thing to each of them.
Actually, Poland was liberated, if you can call it that, by the Red Army, and at that time the USSR was a full fledgeed memeber of the Allies. At the time, the enemy was the Axis, made up mainly of Germany, Italy and Japan. The list of Allied nations inclueded the UK, USA, USSR, and France, among many others.
You’re trying to tie a fictional work into the reality of historical events using a theme of Mutants. And you’re arguing about it.
So after you all finish up HOW and WHO and WHERE the events take place so that the British or any other European Group is not offeneded as to the inaccuracies of the historical timeline – you all should continue on to explain how the mutant scenario ties into WW II and how that relates to Poland and the Concentration Camps. ‘Cause we sure as hell do not want to get our historical records wrong.

..and yes, the first film does very clearly say “POLAND1944″.
KiplingKat, just because Eric was being led to a concentration camp in poland, doesnt neccessarily mean that, that is where he ended up.

I’ve been reading the biography of Charles Shulz, and he was part of an armored Allied convoy that helped in liberating Auschwitz
You Are All Missing The Point:
