The Painted Veil is a very un-traditional love story set in the male dominated societies of 1920’s England and China. Cajoled into marrying a man she doesn’t love by her family, Kitty (Naomi Watts) sees the marriage as little more than escaping the confines of her overbearing family by embracing the promise of an exciting life in China. However, she finds her loveless relationship with Walter (Edward Norton) just as unbearable as her family and finds solace in the arms of another man. On discovering his wife’s infidelity, Walter decides to punish his wife by taking a post in a distant rural village in the midst of a cholera outbreak, seeking to discover a way to stem the tide of death.
Initially this only pushes Kitty further away, but slowly through the isolation and quietness of there situation, love begins to blossom as they both learn through their work (Kitty volunteers in an orphanage) that love grows through sacrifice. It’s a long journey, but Kitty and Walter find love through forgiveness and discover a passion that neither knew existed.
It seems like a fairly straightforward role for Norton as a stuffy, self contained British scientist who revels in solitude, yet yearns for a companion, but this coupled with Naomi Watt’s subdued passion and the stunning backdrop of rural China make The Painted Veil and unmissable story of love and discovery.
