Chris Weitz is in negotiations to helm “New Moon,” the sequel to Summit Entertainment’s vampire breakout “Twilight.”
Summit declined to confirm the director’s attachment, but Weitz is believed to be close to a deal to helm the second installment based on Stephenie Meyer’s four-book series.
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are starring, while Melissa Rosenberg is writing the picture which, like the first, centers on the ordinary teenager Bella and the vampire Edward, but adds a werewolf character who figured less prominently in the first film.
Catherine Hardwicke directed “Twilight” but could not reach a deal with Summit on “Moon.” There have been conflicting reports about her departure from the project, with some noting creative and other differences.
Summit has cited scheduling as the reason Hardwicke would not direct the new pic and noted that other franchises have also switched directors for a sequel.
The budget for “Moon” is expected to be slightly higher than the first in the franchise, with a release likely for late 2009 or early 2010.
Weitz has not helmed a girl-oriented project before but had directed movies that encompass elements featured in “Twilight,” directing the teen-aimed coming-of-age tale “American Pie” and the fantasy adventure “The Golden Compass.” [thr]
