4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days is a hard movie to watch. Hard because of it’s subject matter and hard because in essence, nothing really happens.
The entire movie takes place over the course of a single day back in 1987, during Romania’s fading communist regime. A regime that seeks to control every aspect of life, leaving few options for a timed, university student who finds herself pregnant. Abortion is a crime against the state, one punishable by death, but the though of bringing a child into the harsh world of communism with no husband to support her is too much for Gabita who turns to her best friend for help.
The movie has a rough, unprofessional feel to it, with an oppressive feeling of hopelessness. It’s the perfect fit for this movie as the overriding them is one of being caught in a cage with no way out, of having to dive headfirst into an unknown abyss.
It is a strangely compelling human drama, watching two friend prepare for a black market abortion, and being students they have to go with the cheapest option which comes with some disturbing conditions.
4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days is probably as far as you can get from being a feel good movie, or even being called entertainment, but it does raise some very valid questions about the value of life, the consequences of choices and the failure of systems that seek only to control you.
