Welcome to the Sticks (Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis) is the story of Philippe, a humble guy who works for the French postal services. In an effort to please his gloomy wife he tries to get relocated to one of the more sought after towns, but is always passed over by disabled people. With a frustrated wife on his back, Philippe decides to fake being disabled in order to get one of the coveted posts, but fails miserably and is instead punished by being sent to Bergues, a hick little town in the north that everyone thinks is the worst place on earth, where they speak funny and do weird things.
Philippe’s wife is so distraught that he has to move north by himself, travelling south on occasional weekends to be with his wife and child. Philippe however, discovers that the North isn’t so bad, or as cold as it’s reputed to be, but his wife won’t believe him, and in fact shows him more love than she ever has when he’s home for the weekend, so he decides to keep up the pretence that it is terrible up north.
Of course you know what happens next, and to be honest there isn’t much in the way of originality in this movie, but that’s ok, because as far as lighthearted comedies go, this one will have you laughing all the way through.
