Sorry to hear you think we hate early adopters. I can’t speak towards World at War, but let me clarify our approach to DLC for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare from the Infinity Ward perspective. We would NEVER hold back content, solely to sell it as DLC later down the road. That’s not how we roll, and frankly feel it’s a douchebag move. Something we’re against.
We don’t start working on DLC until we’ve fully finished and given significant time for polishing to the full game and have it out the door and to the hungry gaming public. Even then, we have a window of time where we’re solely focused on getting feedback from gamers and addressing bugs / exploits / and glitches before we start thinking about DLC.
Only once all that is said in done, do we start looking at how we can further expand on the game through more content. As for it going on sale – Sale’s are nothing new and hardly meant to be a slap in the face to early adopters. Especially sales that take place over a year after release. Early adopters jump on board early because they’re hardcore fans who want to play it ASAP. Sales are merely intended to let those who aren’t early adopters join in on the party as well, hell – they’ve waited a year they deserve a discount.
The perks of being an early adopter are far and wide. The biggest being on the bandwagon Day 1 and getting to enjoy the game when the community is the largest and everyone is fresh to the game. Grow as a community, develop techniques, learn the maps, etc. From special community events at launch (Double XP’s, Play with Devs, Community All-Nighters, and exclusive downloads like the Prestige Gamer Pic Pack) and more.
The main point though is, I promise you we (Infinity Ward) would NEVER ship a game without everything we could possibly fit in before launch and have it polished.
Considering the Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare sold over 2 Million copies and was the #1 most downloaded game add-on for Xbox Live and PSN and we still only did 1 map pack proves we’re not in it for the money. We’re in it for adding quality content for our hardcore fans. If we were solely in it for the money, we would have pumped out all kinds of shit just to pump it out, but that’s not our style.

“And why are they doing this along with a final double XP weekend this weekend?”
Answer – it’s the release of Killzone 2 in the States.
As for the variety map pack, funny you mention it cus I downloaded in last night. And even knowing that I am paying twice what I would if I waited til the weekend, I don’t feel riped off. COD4 is the best game I’ve played in years and paying about $2.50 per map for four extra maps is fair by me.
As for Modern Warfare 2, it will be the first game in about five years that I will go out and buy on release day.

By the way, anyone notice the COD 4 mention in “The Wrestler”? Awesome!
