Role Models

Posted by admin On June - 9 - 2009

role-models-dvdEverything about Role Models screams ‘inappropriate humour’!  It’s a movie starring Seann William Scott and Paul Rudd, as two self focussed thirty-somethings, Wheeler and Danny, stuck in a job that is taking them no-where.  Then, one day, Danny’s girlfriend dumps him and he loses it big time, resulting in Wheeler and Danny having to do community work, mentoring at-risk kids.

If you can’t see past the sexual innuendos and seriously inappropriateness of a lot of the situations these two courts appointed mentors find them self in, then you’re not going to find much to laugh about.  If you can see that this is an adult movie, with adult humour, that requires you to relax and enjoy yourself, then you’re going to find yourself laughing out loud raucously.

It’s the kind of humour that is easy to laugh at, but at the same time leaves you wondering how you could possibly be laughing, then makes you laugh some more. But far from being just a baseless comedy, the movie as a whole has a huge heart, with a storyline that proves no one is beyond redemption, and that when life seems to be going nowhere, all it takes is a change of direction to give you a different perspective on life.

Check your brain at the door, be prepared to laugh at the sheer stupidity, and be warned that you may just fall in love with two of the most unlovable mentors and kids that you’ve ever met.

This would probably go on my ‘guilty pleasures’ list.

I saw a preview screening of Role Models at the 24hr Movie Marathon last year and thought that i would hate it, but i actually really enjoyed it. Sure there’s a lot of cheap humour with the usual flotilla of stereotypes but, as Jonathan mentions, there is a real warmth to the film as well that helps you to actually care about what happens to the characters even if you can see it coming a mile away. Some very funny scripting as well. In fact I am arranging to get a DVD copy to show a few friends!

Clarification from last comment: I am not ‘copying’ a DVD but arranging to get a legitimate copy of the film to play. ;-)
