Seven Pounds

Posted by admin On June - 15 - 2009

seven-poundsI’d heard mixed reviews about Will Smith’s Seven Pounds, so I went into watching it without overtly elevated expectations. Sure it was Will Smith, but this wasn’t going to be a special effects blockbuster, but more of a serious drama. I didn’t doubt Will’s ability to nail any given role, but looking at the trailer, I did doubt the movies ability to surprise.

I went into the movie being able to predict the general storyline just from the tailer, which isn’t a good thing, especially when your predictions have been spot on. Of course, no one would probably have put money on the ending – most sensible movie goers would have probably wanted the film to end the way it did, but most wouldn’t have the guts to call it that way.

One thing I can say for the ending, is that for me, I didn’t come soon enough. Seven Pounds had its flaws – big ones – but the acting, direction and production were all good. Will can be happy with his role. The trouble is that Seven Pounds felt like a short story that has been made into a long film. If it could have been condensed to 30 minutes it may have worked.

May have. Because even the story didn’t work for me. I liked the underlying theme of one mans journey to find redemption, but I didn’t like that that man was a judgemental god-wannabe, who pushed people so far, purely so that he could prove that they were not worthy of his supreme help.

Thanks for the review. I now know I won’t miss anything if I don’t get it out on DVD (tho I like Will Smith in Enemy of the State).
