Ok, lets face reality, Michael Bay makes popcorn movies and he does a fine job at it. But as I was sitting in the Imax theatre waiting for the movie to start, I overheard some one say it was two and a half hours long. Now I was worried. Crammed into the Imax seating for that long would be a mission in itself, but my bigger worry was; could Michael Bay keep the momentum up for that long?
Of course, I should never have doubted Bay, his original Transformers was only 6 minutes shorter and that certainly delivered a punch. Revenge of the Fallen was filmed (in-part) with the Imax in mind. Several of the action scenes were filmed in Imax fomat, and as with The Dark Knight, this was an impressive experience.
With action, humour, romace and plenty of cheese, It didn’t really surprise me that the weakest part of the whole movie was the plot. It was pretty much nonsensical, but in reality it was only the flimsiest of string that was needed to tie the action scenes together.
And if we are brutally honst with ourselves, we would admit that we only go to Michael Bay movies for the action. With Revenge of the Fallen Bay has outdone himself. The action is heart pounding and Bay even manages to throw in a few twists along the films predictable path.
With more spectacular robot on robot action scenes than ever before, and enoght explosives to keep the most committed pyromaniac happy for a year, this is definatley a film that demands to be witnessed on the big screen.
LaBeouf and Fox do a half decent job of making us believe that they are in love, though for me, Kevin Dunn’s role as Sam’s dad is the most entertaining of the human actors.
The visual effects, sound and varied locations combine well to deliver a fast paced Hollywood action spectacular that manages to squeeze as much action orientated fun as possible out of it’s two and a half hour runtime.
Probably the best popcorn movie of the year.
