Tierra

Posted by admin On July - 11 - 2009

tierraTierra – literally ‘Earth’ – is a complex tail about life, death, schizophrenia and two women who love the same man. What about the animals you ask? Well, not exactly animals this time, but grubs in the soil of a wine-making province that effects the taste of the wine. To combat the grubs, the mayor brings in an exterminator, a man who’s recently been released form a mental institution due to his schizophrenia.

It’s a vast and complex tale that Medem weaves, and one that many viewers will struggle to follow. Again the line between reality and imagination is blurred and the bizarre is truly embraced. In retrospect If I had a choice I would have watched Tieera after Vacas and before La Ardilla Roja as the style seems to fit more comfortable between the two.

It also makes me apprehensive as to the direction Medem may have taken in his next movie, due for viewing tomorrow night.

In the end, the complexity of Tierra turns out to be nothing more than an over complicated love story – if you can bring yourself to simplify it down that far – where a man has to choose to follow either his heart or his mind.

Medem’s genius is still evident, but it’s buried a little deeper in the ground this time round.
