True Blood is set in the backwoods Louisiana town of Bon Temps, in an alternative reality where vampires have come out of the closet (or coffin) and can survive on a Japanese blood substitute, True Blood.
Of course, not everyone is happy with the reality of vampires and there is plenty of resentment. One person however, is ready to embrace this strange new world.
Sookie Stackhouse is a waitress at the local bar Merlotte’s. She’s not exactly typical either, with the unnerving ability to read minds, she finds something unique when the bar gets its first vampire patron – 173-year old Bill Compton (Steven Moyer) – she can’t read his mind, and finds a refreshing peace when she’s around him.
Typically, along with the human who despise vampires, there are vampire who despise humans and don’t want to get along with them, such is the complications of life in an HBO drama.
In true HBO fashion, True Blood manages to push the boundaries with enough blood and gore, coupled with a splattering of sex and nudity to achieve a well-deserved R18 rating. If you can get past this – the blood and guts is a refreshing addition to some of the tamer vampire rubbish that has been produced recently – you’ll discover an interesting tale of love, loss and acceptance of others, with a sprinkling of conspiracy, and a storyline that hums along at an enjoyable pace, finishing up with not so much a cliff-hanger, but a certain enticement to want to watch the second season.
