The Strength of Water

Posted by admin On August - 25 - 2009

the-strength-of-waterThis rather sombre movie follows twins Kimi & Melody and their hardworking family in their daily lives in a remote settlement on the Hokianga.

The harshness and moodiness of the landscape is beautifully captured by the camera. The story has a bleakness which is well portrayed by the actors.

When Tai arrives to take up residence at his deceased grandfathers derelict tapu house Kimi and Melody befriend him. As Kimi hurts himself at the house Tai helps Melody take him back to their home where he is warmly welcomed by their parents, but not by their older brother Gene.

Disaster strikes when Melody is taking Tai to see some of the sights of the settlement. Gene’s vicious hunting dog attacks them when they are looking around a dead car dump. Tai quickly gets Melody into the relative safety of an old freezer chest and when he takes refuge in there as well they become trapped which ultimately ends Melody’s life.

The grief of the family and the community is huge. Tai’s part in Melody’s death does not help the community accept him very warmly, especially Gene.

Kimi’s life is shattered and he has great difficulty in accepting life without Melody.
