Flash of Genius

Posted by admin On September - 4 - 2009

flash-of-geniusFlash of Genius is based on the true story of Robert Kearns, a man who invented something we all take for granted: the intermittent windshield wiper. Of course if it were a straightforward story about a man inventing a little piece of automotive history, it would be a pretty boring movie, right? Lucky for us, the Ford Motor Company stole Robert’s idea as their own, and shunned him, thinking they could bully him into oblivion.

What the Ford Motor Company didn’t factor into their plans was that Robert was a David to their Goliath. Unlike the Biblical story however, this fight took a while longer that slinging a solitary stone.

So long that it consumed Robert’s life and drove him to the edge of his sanity.

Flash of Genius is by no means a fast paced movie, but it is a fascinating story of one man who would not give up until the truth came out, no matter the cost. It’s an inspiration, heart-warming tale that holds up the beacon of hope. For close to two hours, director Marc Abraham keeps you in the palm of his hand, captivating you with the story, complimented by a wide ranging cast who breath life into this larger than life struggle.

Going Deeper: (may contain spoilers)
As much as Flash of Genius is an inspirational story, it also comes with a hefty warning, and some critical questions on the subject of knowing when enough is enough. So lost in his plight for justice is Robert that he neglects the very inspiration for his invention; his loving wife and family. He takes his family past the point of breaking, and shatters the lives of his five children and loving wife, who finally cannot take his obsession any more. One has to ask whilst watching this movie, when does being right become wrong. Should we ever give up on the pursuit of justice?
