Posted by urbankiwi On October - 29 - 2009

It seems to be a week for preview leaks, and just days away from the official feature trailer launch James Cameron’s “Avatar” also does not to appear to be immune to the bug.

The very good quality Feature Trailer from Thailand shows alot more of the characters, story line and action of the up and coming movie. So without too much ado, check out the leaked copy here and leave us your comments.

Lost Season 5

Posted by admin On October - 26 - 2009

lost season fiveReviewing any season of Lost on DVD is like trying to teach a blind man how to master the Rubik’s Cube. Reviewing season five is like teaching a one armed blind man. But I shall give it a go, whilst attempting not to giveaway any real spoilers.

Season five is all about the Oceanic Five returning to the Island, how they do it, why they do it, and what happens when they get there. The five disk DVD set kicks off with an explosive first episode that ramps up your already high expectations for the season, but also has you wondering if they will be able to keep up the momentum over the entire 17-episode run. When I tell you that I watched the entire season in one twenty-four hour period, this will hopefully convince you just how much of an edge of your seats, mind bending adrenaline ride season five is.  Read the rest of this entry »

Generation Kill

Posted by admin On October - 24 - 2009

generation killGeneartion Kill, the true account of a Marine Corps Recon Battalion during the 2003 invasion of Iraq is the modern warfare equivalent of World War II’s Band of Brothers. We enter the story following a Marine Recon Unit on a training exercise, then when they get back to base, in the desert outside of Iraq, we are introduced to Evan ‘Scribe’ Wright, a reporter who is about to be embedded with the Recon Battalion during their foray into Iraq.

Whilst some may disagree with my comparing generation Kill to Band of Brothers, it has some very similar threads; we follow the same group of American soldiers through the length of the war, witnessing some of the major battles of the conflict. As a historical account we have to allow for some artistic freedom, and as with history in general, we don’t get to have tightly scripted action packed episodes every week, with killer cliffhangers. In fact some episodes are seemingly devoid of any reason to watch them, as they plod on at a pace and direction that could be considered mind numbing. But hopefully by this stage you will have realised that Generation Kill isn’t really about huge battle scenes (though there are some spectacular battles) but more about how the American war machine is still an organisational nightmare that only manages to win battles through sheer luck – along with well trained soldiers – rather than any tactical brilliance.  Read the rest of this entry »

Bruce Willis Cast in Kane & Lynch

Posted by admin On October - 21 - 2009

K&LDMA big-screen adaptation of Kane & Lynch is on its way, and the first major casting has been announced. GameDaily interviewed Hollywood producer Adrian Askarieh, who said that Bruce Willis has been cast as the titular character Kane. He also says casting for Lynch will start shortly, and Lionsgate will be the distributor. “After Bruce Willis read [the script], he called it one of the best action scripts he’s ever read,” said Askarieh, “and Bruce is an expert in terms of action scripts because he’s read everything over the last 20 years.” Simon Crane is set to direct, after being the second unit director on movies like Tomb Raider and Troy.

While the movie won’t be a direct translation of the original game, it’s said to share the premise and some action sequences. “It’s essentially the story of a mercenary teaming up with a schizophrenic psychopath to save his wife and daughter.” He also says that filming is likely to take place in spots like South America and Europe, but nothing is set in stone quite yet. Here’s hoping that with big-name casting, Kane & Lynch will be one of the rare exceptions to the rule of game franchise movie quality. [GameGuide]

Blindness

Posted by admin On October - 19 - 2009

blindness dvdFrom watching the trailer for Blindness, you wouldn’t pick it to be an R18 rated film. You’d probably take a guess that it would be an M rated drama/conspiracy thriller. But Blindness has set its sights on a story of such a scale it will literally knock you for six.

The story begins slowly, with one man suddenly going bind in his car whilst at the lights, but as people come in contact with him, through coming to his aid or just being in the doctors waiting room, more and more people start to go blind. Seeing the warning signs of a pandemic, the government decides to act quickly, isolating the low number of cases in an abandoned high security medical facility. Dumping the infected at the door and giving them verbal instructions to where they need to go.

Such is the fear, that these men in bio suits won’t even show the infected few to their ward or help them make their beds. Fortunately the wife of doctor who is somehow immune has joined her husband by faking her own blindness. There is an uneasy calm in the ward, but as more and more people are admitted and not enough food is delivered, Blindness turns ugly, with the occupants of ward 3 taking control and ruling the institution Lord of the Flies’ style.  Read the rest of this entry »

Bottle Shock

Posted by admin On October - 17 - 2009

bottle shockBased on the true story of a Napa Valley winery who managed to beat the French at their own game, ultimately opening the wine world for any country to partake, Bottle Shock is a feel good drama the betrays the flavour of it’s trailer.

Thinking I was going to enjoy a laugh out loud comedy, Bottle Shock could have fallen flat on its face, being a light drama, infused with just a hint of humour. Fortunately the story was compelling enough to hook me in, and the combination of actors interesting enough to entertain me.

The sun parched Napa Valley proved an enticing background to play out the complex story of a bull-headed man with a dream, his renegade son and a cast of misfits who all butt heads from time to time, but who have to all play their parts in order for the dream to come true.

If one of us wins, all of us win, is the overriding sentiment of the film, with all the wine makers of the Napa Valley banding together with the knowledge that it matter not who wins, but that one of them wins as they will all taste the fruits of success, and so they did.  Read the rest of this entry »

Last Chance Harvey

Posted by admin On October - 17 - 2009

last chanceharveyI grabbed the opportunity to watch Last Chance Harvey‚ on a wet afternoon while my son was having his afternoon nap. It was a great watch and I must say a welcome change from The Wiggles‚.

Harvey Shine writes jingles for commercials, just before he leaves to attend his daughters wedding in London he learns that his job is in jeopardy. He arrives to London to feel rather awkward among his daughters friend and ex wife and new partner. He gets some upsetting news from his daughter and decides to fly home to save his job and not attend the wedding reception.

However after a series of more problems he meets Kate. Kate works at the airport, looks after her mum, who is on her own and occasionally gets set-up on blind dates by her friends. Harvey and Kate meet and share a very special time together. Kate encourages him to return to the wedding reception. This begins a hopeful romance.  Read the rest of this entry »
