The DaVinci Code may have been the book that propelled the then unknown Dan Brown to best selling author. It may have been the book that gave his previous efforts a larger readership, but it was in no way his best work. Ron Howard’s film adaptation of it, despite raking in a truckload of money, was a ponderous, pompous piece of trash.
Angels & Demons however is probably Don Brown’s finest hour, and as such seems only fair that Ron Howard do a much better job at bringing it to the screen. Fortunately he does.
It’s a difficult film to review however, as it has none of the suspense and intrigue of the book, purely because I’ve read the book and hold in my knowledge, the entire plot and final outcome. This is the danger and sad reality of reading books! It’s also unfortunate that the story centres around one of the most boring processes in the Catholic Church.
Despite everything, Ron Howard still managed to have me positioned on the edge of my seta from time to time, and Tom Hanks seems to have grown into his role as Robert Langdon. This coupled with an outstanding supporting cast and some brilliant cinematography, comes together to deliver and exciting thriller, that despite Dan Brown’s reputation, isn’t really anti-Catholic.
