You know when you have made an impact in society when you become constant parody material in high rating sitcom comedies, and Michael Moore has had his fair share of airtime as a parody. Yet this enduring Author, Film maker and Liberal Political Commentator certainly knows how to take on some fairly major American Institutions.
Be it the health system, core American ideologies or big business; Michael Moore seems to have a knack for targeting some of the biggest groups in the States.
And with Capitalism: A Love Story Mr Moore returns to some of the themes he ventured into with his first movie “Roger & Me” and takes on Corporate America.
The documentary takes you on an emotive roller coaster ride through the lives of average Americans trying to live out their lives during one of the worlds worst economic downturns. We are introduced to a long line of stories where people have lost their homes and possessions and the ongoing impacts in their quality of life.
And this is what Michael Moore does best, the story telling. He knows how to draw the audience into an emotional bond with the characters. At first its a little too pushy, but as the story progresses you start to realise that this isn’t just a few lone voices of discontent, but a movement of people starting to hurt under a very one sided system.
Halfway through the presentation Michael Moore takes on Corporate America. Obviously by this stage a lot of Mr Moore’s targets have become wise to his Satirical form of documentary making and his numerous attempts to take on the system results in little more than comic relief. However it does bring up some disturbing facts and figures, along side clear evidence of corruption and signs of a system taking more power than it should.
The information presented in this documentary is communicated very well and as it progresses you cant help but be drawn into forming your own opinions, or at the very least walk away from the cinema with a lot to ponder.
While the documentary is focused on the American Business and Political systems, it does carry some very strong warnings to those globally involved in capitalism.
At the end of the presentation i felt challenged with stories of injustice and examples of alternatives. This was a good movie, and well worth looking into if you want to make sense of capitalism. While not being a full picture, it does offer some very real insights into cause and effects of the system, as well as major warnings.
