Probably not since “The Dark Knight” has a movie had such an intense air of anticipation. I think most adults have been wondering exactly how anyone could transfer a highly loved Kid’s book such as “Where the Wild Things Are” on to the big screen. So for the past six months I have been eagerly waiting for the release of this film.
So as the movie unfolded and this children’s story came to life on the big screen I found myself captivated. Just in case you need a reminder, the basic story of “Where the Wild Things Are” is as follows. So the basic premise of this uber cool documentary is what will happen when you take three world class and quite different guitarists and lock them together in a big old warehouse. In fact that sounds more like some battling reality show then what this movie is really like. “It Might Get Loud” features legendary classic rock guitarist Jimmy page from “Led Zeppelin”, the atmospheric soundscape building guitarist The Edge from U2 and extremely experimentally raw guitarist Jack White from “The White Stripes’. Quite possibly three of the most influential guitarists within the past three generations of electric guitarists. Page, Edge and White have each played their part in helping to shape the direction and style of guitar playing within the past five decades.
At first glance Bandslam looks like the typical shallow teen dramedy, with aspirations of High School Musicallity. I guess with that in mind I was kind of ready to dismiss it from the get go. What a mistake that would have been. Bandslam focuses on a lonely outcast Will Burton, whose love of music and amazingly deep general knowledge on the history of rock n’ roll creates this very endearing character. In fact it actually showed some real respect to good music through the music tastes of the main character Will Burton, music like classic punk such as the Ramones, David Bowie, right through to the ragamuffin reggae of Jimmy Cliff and so many more.
