Terminator Salvation continues the current Hollywood trend of rebooting tired old franchises by re-inventing them as darker, grittier realities. As such Terminator Salvation is predominantly set in the future where man has been at war with the machine for some time. The Prophet and Saviour, John Connor is loved by the remaining humans, mainly because he speaks to tem via radio broadcast on a daily basis, but is not as well received by the military leadership. He’s a bit of a loose cannon, but tends to get the job done.
Whilst not as action packed as I was anticipating, Terminator Salvation was an enjoyable romp. A few nagging plot details prevented me from totally being able to jump into the Terminator world and enjoy the film as a really good piece of entertainment – but that could also have been an unhealthy expectation of what McG had promised with this, the first of a planned trilogy.
Salvation’s greatest strength however comes from it’s overriding theme that humanity and machine will always be different, because no matter how smart machines get, they will never have love.
“The difference”, John Conner tell us at one point, “between man and machine is that we bury our dead”. He’s talking about love and respect, those very human emotions that make us different from any other species – though as the film admits on a couple of occasions, humanity also has the ability to become worse than the machines that seek our total demise.
It’s an interesting concept to have weaved in a movie about a war where the only form o victory is total annihilation, but McG does a fine job, and hopefully if number two gets green lit, we’ll see a much more action orientated outing next time.
