Hey Look.. Its Mel Gibson..
Yeah its been 8 long years since Mr Gibson has graced the screens. But he has been busy creating some of the decades most talked about movies. So how did he fare on his first big outing? Both Nick and Myself went off to see this screen legend return with his characteristic action sequences and witty one liners.
<Nick> Yer he’s back, Mel, in front of the camera and he’s brooding. A movie length brooding montage in every location and from every angle. Oh sure he has a lot to brood about. His daughter was literally blown away right in front of him, which looking back at the movie now drove him slightly mad. And as we’re usually looking through his eyes at the story, that may explain the rest of the movie.
<Skip> Honestly when the movie started i was wondering what the heck was going on.. It was, to be fair, a very slow starter..
<Nick> Oh sure movie things where happening, people were emoting, guns where being loaded. But you know you’ve pushed your plate away when you find yourself looking around the cinema wondering what everyone’s up to. Admittedly the dude in front of me was driving me to brood as he was rustling his M&M packet for what felt like a good 5 to 10 min. I blame it on Mel as I imagined myself doing a giant single slow motion slap that first strikes the packet then his face showering M&Ms all the way from G15 to the far reaches of the high L’s.
<Skip> Yeah that guy needed a Mel Gibson make over.. But the movie did have significant stall patches. I kind of envied the M&M’s Rustler as he had something to do.
<Nick> Which brings me to what I liked about the movie. It has three big, jump surprises. Which are intensified by the fact your daydreaming through the movie. The second one was amazing, now I’m not a big jumper but wow I’m glad I didn’t have a slushee as it would have been all over mine or Skips pants.
<Skip> You know what… This was the saving grace for this movie. The plot was ok-ish, and occasionally stalled, the dialog was often light and weak, but the pay off in this movie was the genuine surprises in the action.
Some of the characters were a bit dry and somewhat forced, and it was often Mel’s character interacting with the extras which brought some of the most memorable moments of this movie.
<Nick> Also Mel’s nemesis/friend, played by Ray Winstone was done well, but Edge of Darkness reminds me of that AMWAY meeting I was tricked into, I wasn’t buying any of it, I just sat there quietly until the end just to be polite.
<Skip> Ray Winstone was awesome. Stand out actor in this movie, he was a genuine mystery the whole way thru the plot until the very end. Overall the movie ended on a positive, but it seemed to be like a cunning Poker Player who kept all the cards to his chest in fear of revealing the plot. Hey this is in no way a bad movie, if i was in need to some mindless entertainment then this would be a pick. I guess we were expecting a little more Mel magic in the movie, but i think the plot may have betrayed him a little.
