Daybreakers

Posted by admin On March - 14 - 2010

BOO!! …That surprise is in honor of this movie, as it has the earliest surprise in a movie I think I’ve ever seen. Anyway, Daybreakers, Vampires the majority, humans the minority, almost extinct in fact. That made me look forward to this movie, as this idea hasn’t been done, well. The idea that its not a post apocalyptic Mad Max world but a functioning at first glance ‘normal’ world with cops and trains and getting up in the morning to go to work and I thought yer that’s cool, something different. Yet I left the theater a little frustrated.

But that’s what happens isn’t it, that’s the classic movie watching blunder. Going into a movie, with high expectations. I didn’t want to read reviews on it, so I just had the promos and the actors, great actors, Willem Dafoe, Ethan Hawke and Sam Neil who has a great evil grin. Well maybe its not a blunder its just a risk taken and I just won my money back. As it’s such a mixed bag of cool ideas and dumb ones. Cool ideas like if they don’t get enough blood they turn into mindless zombie/vampires and they’re running out of humans to extract blood. It’s a police state and everyone is starting to panic. Sweet.

Flip side. There are a few but I’ll give you one to just to sum the rest of them up. Ethan Hawke’s main character is rich enough to kit his car out so he can drive during the day. He’s driving out to meet someone, you get a few shots from inside the car. Pitch black with monitors so he can drive. Totally blacked out so absolutely no sun light gets in. he parks up to meet this guy and the way they can have an eye to eye discussion, he parks under a tree…. we even get a POV shot looking up and see light spilling round this one leaf that’s protecting him. So apparently he’s fine in the shade… Cloud cover… And so something so dumb totally spoils for me the car sequence before and after. Now if it was just this one thing yer fine whatever but it’s the fresh banana cake with sprinkles of **** on it. (where **** is, something you, the reader, really don’t want sprinkled).

So frustration, the movie has great effects and style, its not scary but I counted seven jumps. I just bit into this movie without caution, thinking ahh yer this is sooo good-WAIT no it isn’t! So the trick is with a brush and a few flicks you’ll probably quite enjoy it.
