Whilst Morgan Spurlock’s 2004 documentary, Super Size Me may have been easy to dismiss due to the fact that most of us don’t eat fast food for every meal, everyday of the month, Robert Kenner’s Food Inc is harder to sweep under the carpet because it shows us just how unsafe our supposedly safe foods are.
At least for everyone living in America. We might feel a little smug living in New Zealand knowing that our government doesn’t subsidise farmers to produce corn that then gets sold to the big food companies bellow cost so it can be force feed to every form of meat they sell, even fish. But our smugness shouldn’t last that long when you consider the recent proposal for a massive undercover cow farm in the South Island.
Whilst the American food system seems to be beyond help, we kiwis should sit up and take notice of everything that Kenner uncovers in Food Inc and start asking serious questions about the way our food is produced, and start making ethical choices and demanding transparency from the companies that produce what we eat.
Food Inc will open your eyes to just how bad the farming industry has become in the States, and make us wonder just how we can tolerate our own battery chicken farming, and hopefully enable us to stop our selves willingly being lead down the same path as the American population has been.
