All three of the Top Gear presenters are essentially little boys in grown up bodies, and it seems that at least one of them has finally decided to let his inner boy take total control, as James May presents a 6 part journey into the world of toys. And not just any old toys, but six classic british toys from yesteryear that are still available – if some what less popular – today.
But rather than be a show all about James May’s favourite toys, May has chosen to make each episode a community project, attempting to engage todays youth in the practical, hands on toys of his childhood, rather than the more virtual toys of todays generations.
Of course with his Top Gear heritage, May has to do everything on a huge scale. As such Plasticine gets made into a flower garden built as part of the Chelsea Flower Show, Lego gets used to make a full sized house, Airfix gets a similar treatment as May makes a 1:1 scale Spitfire kit, then gets school kids to make it, Scalextrix breaks a world record by recreating one of Britons long lost race tracks, engineering students use Meccano to make a real bridge that May has to cross and and model railways get taken to the extreme.
We get to see it all, from the formation of an idea, to the planning, with a little bit of history thrown in, and the help of people in the community. Together May and an army of ordinary Britons bring the warmth and life back into these icon toys with the usual amount of humour and fun that one would associate with May’s more famous TV show.
All in all and entertaining and fascinating look at real toys.
