Battlefield Mysteries is a four part documentary series that follows Norm Christie as he visits the locations of four significant battles, talks to various experts, reconstructs events using CGI imagery and finally gets to the truth of what really happened. Presented in an easy going, understandable way, it makes history interesting and alive.
The episodes cover four distinct battles, but the stand out one for me was Who Killed Michael Wittman? mainly because I had read a little about him in in the Villers-Bocage Flames of War rule book – yes, I’m a bit of a nerd and like playing with little metal armies. Of course the rule book focuses on his major triumph, and says little about his death. Possibly because little was known about his death, and possibly because he’s a heroic figure in the rules.
With new information that came to light in the late 80′s, along with eyewitness accounts and measuring the lay of the land, Norm Christie paints a different picture of Wittman, taking him down a notch or two from his lofty heroic position, and manages to put a more earthly spin on his fame and untimely death.
A brilliantly produced and well researched series.
