It is a Hollywood biopic about the life and times of pioneer aviator Amelia Earhart. For those who live under a rock, she was the first woman to ever fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. A triumphant achievement for anyone, let alone a woman living in times when not much was expected of her other than to look pretty, spit out babies and bakes cakes. She became a celebrity in her own right and much of her legacy still remains within the aviation industry. But what she is most famous for is disappearing on the last leg of her flight around the world in 1937. Double Oscar winner Hillary Swank plays the title role. I admit I am a big fan, however there is something seriously whiffy going on with Hillary Swank lately. An actress who is usually so bankable has made two successive stinkers. The first being the god-awful P.S I love you (I shudder at the thought) and Amelia. I have heard the likeness between Swank and Earhart is quite uncanny, but a good portrayal requires more than an uncanny likeness. She is stiff and her accent is a strange mix of English and Canadian which just left me confused and annoyed. I am most probably reading too much into the film (as I do) but I have a number of issues with film biopics. I think too many creative liberties are taken, cementing the fictional aspects of the subject as fact, to an audience who will watch the movie and do no more research than that? I realise it’s not the point, education in movies is usually conceded for dramatic effect, but too often historical facts get swallowed up by movie fiction! Truth is sacrificed for profits and you can never really trust what you are seeing, hearing or learning. Which gets me to my point…This is a Hollywood take on Amelia Earhart, a crap one. You will learn as much about her as you would learn about Pearl Harbour, by watching… Pearl Harbour. Don’t expect to get any clever-er! This is a paint by numbers film which will leave Amelia Earhart fans disappointed and anyone who has never heard of her very, very bored!! Leave it on the shelf, surf right past on the TV, it’s not worth your time!
