9

Marketers need to be shot. Especially Hollywood marketers responsible for creating trailers for films. Even more so the fool who was responsible for creating the epic trailer for 9 featuring the music of Coheed And Cambria. Don’t get me wrong, it was an awesome trailer – it did everything a trailer should do. And everything a trailer shouldn’t do. It built up the expectation that 9 was going to be a kick-ass, animated action film. But 9 isn’t an action film. Sure it has moments of action and plenty of peril, but at it’s heart it is a sedate parable. An imaginative and visually lush animated parable about the plight of humanity, set in a futuristic, alternate, World War 1 era.

Had I not expected 90 minutes of adrenaline pounding action with an ear shattering rock soundtrack I would have been able to appreciate it more whilst watching, instead I was forced to reflect on what is a fantastic tale of sacrifice, love and redemption, set in the post apocalyptic, post human world, where the seeds of hope for re-birth are planted by the actions of a hand crafted toy, lovingly created for a single purpose.

9 proves that the imaginative, original, creative spirit is still alive in Hollywood, even if the marketing machine has no idea how to market something of this calibre.
