True Blood: Season Two

Posted by admin On June - 13 - 2010

I’m not a vampire fan. I’m more of a zombie fan. Having said that there have been some really good vampire films recently, none of them have Twilight in their titles. Which makes it all the more mysterious as to why I would love True Blood. Essentially True Blood is closer to Twilight than it is to Let The Right One In, so odds are, I shouldn’t like it. But I did. I think the appeal of season one was was the diversity, and some of the original concepts – vampires blood as a human drug and such. Then there are the locals of Bon Temps. A varied bunch of individuals, and some of them are actually human. Well, most are, but as well as vampires there are mind readers and shapshifters, as well as the anti vampire religious bigots. Clichés may abound, and the story may be pure pulp, but somewhere between Charlaine Harris’ writing and Michael Lehmann’s visual treatment for HBO, some magic has been weaved.

So now we have Season Two. It was, to be honest a little difficult to get back into – I had forgotten almost everything that had happened in Season One and it took me a while to re-orietate myself. But I did, and once again I was hooked. To say that Season Two was more of the same would be a grave misrepresentation. Season Two is a lot darker, with a new, evil force, trying to take over Bon Temps, with abundant drunken orgies and satanic worship to boot.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves, a lot has happened, Sookie and Bill are enjoying life, after Bill’s daylight rescue and discovering who was the serial killer of Season One. Sookie’s best friend Tara finally seems to have settled down and discovered joy in life – but does her rich benefactor, Maryann Forrester, have ulterior motives? And then there’s local business man Sam Merlotte, who discovers that he’s not the only shape-shifter in town.

But the rise of evil is not restricted to the satanic rituals and sexually infused orgies, no, the religious fanatics, namely Steve and Sarah Newlin, the vampire hating pastors of the Fellowship of the Sun, have there own breed of evil, and will stop at nothing to ignite a holy war against the vampire population.

Like a blood thirsty beast, HBO’s True Blood keeps the cheap thrills coming and delivers a blistering season that is essentially brain dead vampire fun for adults.

    I really enjoyed season 2
I love the fact that both the books and tv series are equally as good as each other.
I guess that they’re able to put a lot more detail into a tv series than they could with a movie so I’m glad they didn’t make this into a movie. I’m currently up to the 7th Sookie book so I wonder how many seasons they will make of TrueBlood when season 1 and 2 so far have been about book 1 and 2
    Can’t wait for season 3!
