Its hard to describe this movie in a single sentence. Perhaps the phrase comic sureality (if such a word were to exist) would work. The film originally starts as a documentary about Street Art, filmed passionately by an eccentric french shop keeper (Thierry Guetta) with perhaps a little too much spare time. As he journeys through the then relatively unknown underworld of Street Art, he befriends some of the most talented street artists of our times.
When he has met almost everyone there is to meet in the scene he sets his eyes on the mysterious, yet widely known, Banksy. After a chance encounter he builds up a relationship with the extremely private Banksy and manages to capture some of Street Arts most memorable moments. But this is when life starts imitating art, and the documenter becomes the documented.
After releasing his own documentary Thierry is encouraged to take up Street Art as a way to express himself. The results are surprising, disturbing, tragic and sometimes down right hilarious.
This documentary is as cleverly crafted as an original Banksy art piece. It leaves you informed, entertained and leaves interpretation of the final outcome up to you, the viewer. It is infact.. an original Banksy..
I LOVED it.. I wont even rate this one.. I cant come to the point of placing value on it..You are left wondering if the documentary is about street art, or used by a street artist to document where street art has gone wrong.
This is definitely one of the movies to go to at the New Zealand International Film Festival. Infact Banksy has posted a 5 minute extended preview on his website www.banksyfilm.com which we have embedded here, it only scratches the surface of the genius of this movie.
