Shutter Island is based on Dennis Lehane’s novel of the same name. With two of his previous books being made into exceptional films (Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone) it’s easy to go into Shutter Island with reasonable expectations. Warning bells are raised early in the film however, by Scorsese’s overbearing use of dramatic sounds in a effort (I’m guessing) to instill a sense of foreboding. Well, foreboding installed, but not in the way Scorsese meant. I suddenly wasn’t very confident that this DVD was going to deliver.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo play the part of two U.S. Marshals sent to Shutter Island, the ultra secure hospital for the mentally insane, to investigate the disappearance of one of the patients from a locked, guarded room.
The film starts of well (if you can forgive the overly dramatic score) and sets up a really good guessing game. The combination of Scorsese and Lehane manage to keep you on the edge for a good portion of the film.
However, some things just don’t add up and some scenes are handled way too clumsily. The real problem however is when you hit pay-dirt and rather that being blown away by the revelations, you feel disappointed in the whole affair. The entire film just falls apart at this stage and you feel like you’ve just wasted your entire evening.
It’s a pity, because below the surface of Shutter Island, you can sense a wild ride just wanting to break free of Scorsese’s Directional failures.
