Sometimes when you least expect it, the Great Adventure finds you… and what an adventure it is, at least for Clooney, McGregor and Bridges. Sadly, what starts out as an interesting film, becomes real bizarre, real quick.
Small time reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor), is satisfied with life, he’s married his high school sweetheart and has a steady job. However, when one of the fellow staff members at the local paper they both work for, dies, his wife decides that life is meant for living and dump him for his boss.
Pissed off and out to prove himself, Bob flies to Iraq to find a story amongst the war. There he finds Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), a mysterious guy who claims to be part of an experimental U.S, Military unit trained, amongst other things, to be able to kill a goat just by staring at it. With his big break found, Bob joins Cassady on his wild covert mission to find his old boss, somewhere in the Iraq desert.
One of the main problems with this film is that it claims to be based on a true story, the DVD begins with a simple statement; More of this is true than you would probably believe. Ok, so I’ll be honest, my cynical side suddenly went into overdrive. But bear with me, and be warned, this may be considered a spoiler, but how much faith can you put in a story where the only surviving witness ends up taking LSD and hallucinating?
Sure, it has it’s moments, and has some great scenes. There’s even moments when a chuckle left my mouth. But for all the great work by Spacey, McGregor and such, the film just falls flat for some reason. Maybe it’s because it claims to be true, whilst trying to be a comedy in a drama vein. Possibly, if the director and writer had stayed away from the whole ‘true story’ aspect, and ramped up the OTT comedy, it would have been a riot.
Sadly, it’s just an empty mess.
