An unknown plague has turned most of the world’s population into vampires and as the human race nears extinction, vampires realise they have to capture and farm every remaining human and find a blood substitute before human blood runs dry. Of course, a renegade group of vampires believes there must be a better way, and there is. They make a remarkable discovery that has the power to save the human race.
But wait, there’s more.
The vampires in charge don’t really want substitute blood, or the ability to save humanity. What a shocker.
So yeah, Daybreakers does suffer from a degree of cheeseosity, with a fairly predictable plot. But, it does have a nice little twist and raises some interesting concepts.
Most importantly is that despite a shaky start, the film actually works rather well, in an old school action/splatter-fest kind of a way. From exploding vampires to a sexy female in need of assistance, Daybreakers churns out the fun and action at a perfect pace, with a surprisingly likable role for Willem Dafoe and a dastardly role for Sam Neil.
The other great thing about Daybreakers is that it’s a real vampire film. No sparkly vegans to be seen, and some very unpleasant side effects of not consuming enough human blood.
As far as vampire films go, Daybreakers would have to be in my top five of all time.
