I know I Probably say this every time a new season of Top Gear comes out on DVD, but I’m going to say it again, because it’s true: Top Gear just keeps getting better and better. Case in point is episode 1 of season 12, where Clarkson, May and Hammond are given the challenge of each buying a truck. Then they are given a series of challenges to complete. If you’ve seen much of Top Gear before you’ll know that whilst on paper, completing challenges in a big truck might not sound like fun, but what actually transpires is. What’s more, I had already seen this challenge on a precious Top Gear Challenges DVD, yet I all most wet my self with laughter watching this episode all over again.
In fact I think I could watch it again and still come away with tears streaming down my face from laughing too much.
Of course, one episode does not a season make, and to be honest, some episodes do seem a little on the slow side. But even a slow episode is more fun than most TV shows that get screened on our TVs these days.
The trio return to the states, but get told make a serious documentary by American Immigration who apparently were non-too happy with their first American Special! Still, telling these three boys to make a serious documentary about driving muscle cars across America is equal to leaving a child in front of a large bowl of chocolate ice cream and telling them not to touch it: It isn’t going to happen.
But it’s not only the American’s telling the British funny men to be serious, one long time viewer writes in and complains that Top Gear doesn’t take the role of testing new cars out seriously enough, and that it’s not all about speed. Cue Clarkson driving the new Ford Fiesta down a country road talking about all it’s features – going through the motion, discussing fuel economy, affordability, then, just as you’re about to put a gun against you hear and pull the trigger Clarkson asks the serious question of how well the Fiesta would handle in a situation where you’re being chased by a Corvette in a shopping mall. Brilliant.
Simply put, if you like British humour and cars, Top Gear 12 is the best DVD ever.
