Survivors

Posted by admin On October - 4 - 2010

A mysterious disease is rampaging through England (and the rest of the world) affecting most of the population, with no cure in sight, it looks like it’s the end of the world.

With a mortality rate of around 98%, only a few scattered people survive. Survivors is the story of what happens next.

It’s also a re-make of a series that the BBC did back in the seventies, that recently got released on DVD. And that is the main problem. Having seen, and loved the original back in December, it’s difficult to accept the changes made in the re-make.

The BBC have however done a great job in bringing the story into it’s modern setting, and as such have had to make changes to the beloved characters and the story-line. Anyone who hasn’t seen the original of course won’t have any issues with this, and by the end of the first season I had become acquainted with the new characters and had absorbed myself into the story so much that I cant wait for season 2 to get it’s DVD release.

It’s essentially a more realistic take on Danny Boyles 28 Days Later (minus the Zombies) where we get to see first hand what happens when society breaks down and peoples true characters are bought to the surface.

In a dog eat dog world you’ll either lead by example, or by creating an atmosphere of fear. The strong will prey on the weak, and the weak must band together to survive.

There seems to be a bit more of a conspiracy theory going on in the new Survivors, where in the old series, the opening credits alluded to the Chinese/Soviets having made the disease and accidentally let it loose, in the new series it seems like it may have been a deliberate attack by a shadowy organisation.

Imaginative and grounded in an apocalyptic possibility, Survivors is British drama at it’s best.
