Last week we learned that writer/director Tony Gilroy would be helming the upcoming Bourne film, The Bourne Legacy. The nagging question left on people’s minds was whether Matt Damon could be lured back to the series after stating he wouldn’t return without Paul Greengrass. Well, now Gilroy has shed some light on the situation, explaining the basic concept he’s envisioned for the film. Apparently, The Bourne Legacy will not focus on Jason Bourne at all, taking Damon out of the equation. In Gilroy’s own words:
“It’s a completely original screenplay. This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project”.
Gilroy went on to say that while Jason Bourne won’t be featured in the film, he is still alive and that the events in the first three films trigger what will happen in the The Bourne Legacy. He wants to expand the world of espionage set up in the previous stories, revealing a larger conspiracy that could eventually lead back to Bourne.
