Bones Season 5

Posted by admin On December - 8 - 2010

It’s been a while since I caught a season of Bones – I think I missed seasons 3 & 4 which essentially put me on the back foot for season five due to an apparently provocative season four finale. The other thing that not watching Bones for a couple of years has done to me, is make it seem a lot more camp that it used to be.

Bones has always been a deft mix of sly comedy and the otherwise numbingly boring world of forensic crime fighting. It was this subtle humour and carefree attitude towards itself that endeared Bones to me in the first place, and gave it that much needed heft above the flotsam of high action forensic crime TV dramas.

Now however, it seemed like Bones wasn’t being quite as subtle with it’s piss taking humour. Not that this turned out to be a bad thing because season five was a fun way to whittle away an evening every couple of days.

For those of you who don’t know Bones, it’s a show based on Kathy Reichs best selling novels and is based around the life and work of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan and her FBI Agent sidekick, Seeley Booth.

The real genius to the show is that Bones knows that she’s a genius and is pretty much up front about it – she’s also lacking is social skills – so much so that one wonders if she has a touch of aspergers and poor Booth is constantly trying to train her in how to relate better to people and situations. It’s some real comedic fare.

Working around them is a team of lovable characters who add their own dynamics in helping solve the cases, and weave some magic through their personal lives. Bones and Booth’s relationship seems to be heating up throughout the season, with the possibility that they will both take the next step becoming more and more of a certainty – but its with the other players where unexpected relationships spring up and down, leading the viewer towards a season finale that whilst I wouldn’t call it a cliffhanger, is certainly unexpected.

Of course, without the array of unique and often bizarre cases, Bones wouldn’t be much more than a bit of cheap slapstick, and Bones doesn’t disappoint.
