Scott Pilgrim is the story of a 22 year old slacker living in Toronto, he plays bass in a mates garage band called sex bob-omb, he’s dating a high schooler and sleeping on the floor of a friends place without any real direction in his life. Its all good tho, his rating is awesome, and Ramona Flowers, the girl of his dreams (literally) has just turned up in the real world.
Edger Wrights job of adapting the Scott Pilgrim comic series was never going to be easy, what seems to start out as a quirky indie romance, blindsides you with tekken style fights, sound monster battles, vegan’s with vegan superpowers & vegan police.
Rest easy tho, Edger nailed it.
He’s taken what was a bizzare mash up of comic randomness, kung fu and gaming references and sculpted it in into the craziest, funnest movies i’ve seen this year. All of the performances are great, the music is perfect, and though it doesn’t have much to do with the movie, the trippy opening sequence totally set the mood for me.
If you want to look a little deeper, Scott Pilgrim isn’t just a tale of one random dude doing street fighter moves on his girls ex’s, it’s got a bit more of a brain than that. It deals with relationship & commitment issues, especially with Ramona. Scott himself hasn’t got the best attitude towards the people in his life and there are repercussions for him. Apart from a couple of minor issues with an ending I thought was a little too convenient, its hard to find much wrong with it and as a reader of the comic I thought Edger not only captured its spirit, but also added some extra touches that built upon its genius.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World is a solid and hugely entertaining watch, and if you’ve got a little geek side it could be the DVD of the summer so far, yes, including Inception! It’s pretty wide appealing, a massive amount of fun and has a big heart, well worth seeing! Do it.
