Eat Pray Love
This is probably one of the harder reviews I’ve had to write. I’m a guy reviewing a film that is unashamedly aimed at the female demographic. It’s a true story that has it’s heart set at changing the way we view our lives and empowering women.
At least that’s what it seems to be wanting to do.
The story is split into four parts, the first serving as in introduction to the main character, Elizabeth Gilbert (Julia Roberts). Elizabeth has everything a woman could want, she’s married, has a perfect house and a successful career. Yet she finds herself unsatisfied. She leaves her husband and her job and falls in love again. But soon relaises that she’s again, not happy in her relationship. After the excitement of having a new sexual partner wears off, Elizabeth finds herself with itchy feet.
What’s a girl to do? Take a year off life and travel through Italy, India and Bali.
This is where the three main parts of the film come into play, Eat, Pray, Love. Read the rest of this entry »
Going The Distance
Relationships are difficult enough in the real world, but when they get the Hollywood treatment, they get to a whole new level of difficult. But is Hollywood just mimicking life, especially when it comes to rom-coms?
It’s certainly easy enough to see the ironic truth to the way Garrett’s (Justin Long) relationship crashes and burns on his girlfriends birthday, just because he doesn’t understand the female mind.
But that’s the thing with a good comedy, and like wise a good rom-com; there has to be that element of truth. Those situations – no matter how far they’ve been stretched – that we can relate to. That’s comedy gold, allowing us to laugh at absurd situations that we all to easily would allows ourselves to get into. And this is where Going The Distance shines.
Sure it’s predictable as hell, but after being dumped by his girlfriend, and going out with his two best mates for a self pity session, Garret bumps into Erin (Drew Barrymore). Erin is a legendary arcade gamer, likes to drink beer with the boys, loves Top Gun and likes Garret’s flatmate. In essence she’s the perfect friend, with benefits. Read the rest of this entry »
Confessions of an Eco-Terrorist
Seen through the eyes of activist Peter Jay Brown, Confessions grants the viewer an intimate look at shipboard life amongst these self proclaimed animal saviors and sea rebels who shaped the green movement we know and love today. Peter and his associates’ exploits are as much comedy as cause. These extremists proudly fly the skull and cross-bones while performing extraordinary feats of daring on the high seas. Their fleet of ramming vessels inflicts damage to whalers, illegal drift-netters, and seal hunters that operate illegally world-wide. The hard nosed cast of characters exude bravery and whit, all while engaging in action packed conflict including sinkings, boardings, arrests, and plenty of rammings. Read the rest of this entry »
