It has to be said that the original Resident Evil was flippen awesome. Essentially it’s only the memory of the first film that kept me coming back though three sequels just in case the franchise managed to regain it’s glory.
Sadly, Resident Evil, as a film franchise has turned to shit. Extinction was such a load of bollocks that I swore off the series for life. However the memories of the 2002 film that pretty much made me a Milla Jovovich fan, caused me to act with unrestrained stupidity and order Afterlife.
Afterlife sees Milla Jovovich once again return to her role of Alice, still on a mission to destroy the Umbrella Corporation, but this time with an army of super human Alice clones. Thrown into the mix is a subplot of Alice meeting up with a group of survivors and helping them get to a mythical safe haven called Arcadia.
Wait, did I say subplot? Well, not, that was the plot.
But what about the army of Alice clones and destroying the Umbrella Corporation I hear you scream? Well, a team of mere mortal cops for hire manage to annihilate the Alice Army, with the exception of the head Umbrella guy who manages to escape on his helicopter, only to discover the real Alice hiding on board about to kill him, except he plunges a syringe into her neck, killing off the T-virus and reducing Alice to a mere female.
Cue helicopter crash which the mortal Alice survives and finds a small plane blah blah band of survivors blah blah thousands of zombies blah blah one huge mutant Silent Hill style zombie blah, blah blah…. oh, and a twist at the end followed by another twist, cue sequel.
Yes, they took Alice’s powers away from her, created an army of boring Zombies, threw in a story-line no one cares about and filled it with a few set piece action scenes that made mowing the lawns seem a somewhat more exciting thing to be doing.
