Burn Notice returns to DVD for it’s second season, continuing on from the explosive ending of the first season. This season is as cool and confident as the shows main man, Michael Westen, an ex-sppok who was burned at the beginning of season 1.
An addictive mix of stand-alone tales, a season-long story arc, and the continuing main story is the backbone of Burn Notice. Add to this the delicious characters, which this season includes Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer as a shady Governmental type who may just be the one who Burnt Westen, but now is controlling him to do her bidding. It’s a cat and mouse chase as Westen tries to uncover who she is, without upsetting her enough to carry out her threats towards his friends and family.
Westen’s best (only) friend, the puppy dog mimicking Sam and gun happy ex-girlfriend Fiona, along with his mother round off the usual cast members who make this fast paced spy drama more of a campy comedy. And it needs it. Burn notice could so easily have been a very dark drama, but wins with it’s whimsical attitude and do good weekly missions where Westen and co. help the hapless residents of Miami. From Waitresses being stalked by drug dealers, to a father whose been scammed out of the money he needs to get treatment for his sick son, these are the stories that carry the show from week to week, whilst the season long arc keeps us hooked till the very last episode.
And then there’s the Westen touch, the soothing laid-back voice over as he waffles on, explaining to us all the tools of the spy trade, from making a crude x-ray machine to the active ingredients of pepper spray. Is it useful? Probably not. Is it true? Who cares. It’s what sets Burn Notice apart from any other show. It keeps it fun, entertaining and believable, in a cheesy kinda way.
Burn Notice Season 2 takes everything you loved about Season 1 and makes it so much more enjoyable. FILMGUIDE rating: Reviewed by: Jonathan Read
