Pretty much the fate of the world rested on Britain’s ability to stand firm against Hitler, but it was a battle that she could not win alone. Without a steady flow of food, raw materials and munitions from America, Britain wouldn’t be able to hold out. It’s amazing then, that so little focus has been given to the epic battle that raged for four years with the loss of 100,000 people and 2,500 ships.
Fortunately then, for people like me, who according to my wife, have an “unhealthy’ interest in World War II, SBS have released this fascinating four part docu-drama that takes an in depth look at the battle for control of the atlantic.
Looking at critical moments as the balance of power changed as new technologies gave each side the upper-hand, Convoy takes the viewer on a visual overview that not only looks at the big picture, but also shed light on the personal stories of the men, mainly young merchant seamen, many who had never been to sea, and most who didn’t know how to swim, who made the ultimate sacrifice in one of the most important battles of World War II.
