The King’s Speech

Posted by admin On June - 11 - 2011

The King’s Speech had the potential to be a rather dry period drama, but what saved it from a fate worse than death was how funny it was. Don’t get me wrong, it is a serious period drama, but the humour will have you laughing out loud. It’s very refreshing to be able to laugh during a film of this genre.

More than just a gigglefest though, The King’s Speech is an engrossing tale about the complexities of Royal life and the role of a fearfully stuttering Prince Albert and his accession to King and the need to lead a country to war though nothing more than his imperfect words.

The story is told through humour but also through intimacy. It’s refreshing to see the portrayal of genuine love between Elizabeth and Albert, and Helena Bonham-Carter fills the role of Elizabeth with a tender warmth and compassion, leading a superb supporting cast that is pitch perfect.

Obviously a period drama isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you love a good story, told well and supported by the best acting you’re likely to see this year, then The King’s Speech is a must watch.
