I wasn’t expecting much from the Seth Rogen fronted The Green Hornet, and after the dismal Green Lantern I was expecting even less. Super-heroes seemed to be on a downwards slide.
But surprisingly, Seth and The Green Hornet got it mostly right.
It’s a predictable story of an overbearing father, a spoilt rich kid who becomes a bit of a playboy, but then discovers a thirst for justice when his father dies.
Teaming up with his father’s mechanic, The Green Hornet and his side kick Kato begin to bring justice to the mean streets – but this is no ordinary super-hero and sidekick tale. Nope. In this version the super-hero is a bumbling rich kid and the sidekick is the real enigmatic and capable hero.
In the daytime The Green Hornet obviously goes by his real name of Britt Read and thanks to the death of his father owns the newspaper and is bale to make sure that The Green Hornet gets a lot of press, rising in notoriety rapidly and coming to the quick attention of the Russian crime boss.
Throw in the totally unnecessary Cameron Diaz to help force a wedge between Hornet and Kato and you have the predictable plot all laid out.
It’s not exactly original, but it does know what it wants to be, a cheesy, over the top and fun action flick. When it’s in top gear, The Green Hornet hums along at quite a pace, having you laughing till it hurts. When it gets bogged down in the middle – thanks a lot to Diaz – it feels like grid-lock. Fortunately Rogen and co, find the gear stick and some open road to finish at high speed. FILMGUIDE rating: Reviewed by: Jonathan
