World War II DVDs are a dime a dozen, and for the most part are of poor quality and frankly not worth the money spent on them. WWII in HD promises something radically different. Whilst you may scoff at a BluRay the promises archival footage in High Definition when nothing was actually films back then in HiDef, the true beauty of WWII in HD is that it’s all filmed in colour. Not colourised black and white, but filmed in glorious full colour.
Of course the quality of the recently discovered film stock varies considerably, but it is impressive to see the war in colour.
Another thing that sets WWII in HD from the rest is the narration. Rather than just cover the war as it happened, WWII in HD is set against the backdrop of the personal stories of several men and women who served in the various battles.
Following the war from it’s beginnings to the very end, WWII in HD jumps back and forth between the Pacific and Europe, whilst this is little annoying at first, it’s also refreshing to be able to see that battles were raging half a world away around the same time as each other.
What isn’t so great – but it’s no surprise as this BluRay was created by The History Channel – is that it’s entirely American focused. It’d be easy to forget that the yanks fought along side the British, Kiwis, Aussies and such.
Packaged nicely on two discs, WWII in HD is a well grounded – if American centric – look at World War II, it doesn’t sugar coat anything, rather the colour film brings to life some very emotional scenes, from Japanese atrocities to the stark horror of Hitler’s final solution.
WWII in HD is quite simply, one of the best World War II documentaries you’re likely to see. FILMGUIDE rating: Reviewed by: Jonathan
